Calling All Lovers

Last year I began a series that showed a different side of couples, Is For Lovers Series- couples that not only were crazy for each other, but had something in common, something that bonded them, a common affinity that harmoniously brings them together. Married, engaged, together for 3 weeks, 3 months, the length of time doesn't matter, it's what make you stand out from other couples.

For past examples, I had Liz and Glenn discuss how they CSS each into each other's heart's (cheesy, but they can't deny it), I had Hanako and her husband demonstrate how a young marriage can toughen you up in life's unexpected moments, how there can be humor in the most mundane things in life like Chloe and Sean discover, and how creativity can bring you closer together instead of being competitive like Christina and B.

Why does your relationship stand out? If you think you have a unique bond, email me, I want to hear it and my readers want to know.

The Poppies

Photobucket

I have some news- I was nominated for a Poppy Award for Favorite Photographer from Poppytalk! You have all been so supportive and it's because of you guys I was even included. I can't believe I was even nominated! If you guys could vote for me here, I would be super grateful.

Every vote counts, but I know I'm probably not going to win. I'm not being modest, just realistic. I mean, I'm up against a group of my favorite photographers. It's still weird being even considered one. Just being in the same category as them is such an honor and I'm so grateful to be in the same round as some of the women who have given me the inspiration to even pick up a camera in the first place. The nominee itself is thrilling and thank you to everyone who kept bugging me to keep going. Some of the most motivating and encouraging people I have yet to meet.

I'm also doing a guest post on Polkadot Robot. It's one of my favorite blogs and I'm excited to be a part of it! Read the DIY I did here.

6,768 Miles Apart

6,768 Miles Apart is back! This time with Polaroids!
I know I've gained a few new readers (thank you!) over the past couple of months and need an introduction to the project. We took a break while Ana B. from On Dressing Up was in Europe (Check out her blog for updates and amazing photos).
How the project came to is here.
Our archives are here and here.
Every other week either Ana B. or I host the photo project on our blogs, and I'm happy to curate the first Polaroid format for the new year! Can you spot Naomi in one of the Polaroids?

Ana B. on the left, myself on the right. ♥

Diana Mini Photos by Daydream Lily

(btw, I'm doing a guest post on ♥ Much Love Anna ♥ . I'm also going to sit down one of these night this week and spend the evening getting back to emails and blog reading. i'm so behind!!)

When the Diana Mini came out, I was a little irritated with Lomography. For about $10 more, you can get the original Diana camera, which I'm more partial to. When I was deciding what to giveaway for my one year post, the Diana Mini was a better choice economically, not just for me but for you (or the winner).
The Diana Mini takes 35mm film, which is about $5 to develop, than 120 film, which can cost up to $20 a roll.
When I saw Daydream Lily's photos from India, it's the perfect size for someone on the go. The photos came out beautifully and if you are not sure of the Diana Mini, or if you haven't entered the giveaway- take a look at her pictures! These should change your mind! Go and enter here!

Daydream Lily needs no introduction. If you don't know her blog, shame on you (I say this with love, of course!). Her blog is one of the most visually inspiring and introduces her readers to great artists. She'll be updating more on India and more with her Diana Mini, check her blog for updates.

The Slow Readers Book Club has a forum open now! It was in the early stages of being tested out, and we are still trying to tweak the design of the layout, but the important parts are working great-- the discussions!

The forum may seem a little confusing like most forums but to get you started, here are some helpful links-
and even an open topic on voting on the next book.

Thank you for all your support and happy reading! :)

one year birthday: the after party {closed}

Ok, so my last post was a little emotional but it's something I've been wanting to get off my mind, (and out of my blog drafts) for months. I hope none of you took it offensively- I just believe this community is worth much more than an uncredited photo and I get all Rosie Riveter about a subject.

I can't believe it's been one year. That's nuts. Here are my goals for 2010 Blogger style:

-New layout
-Outfit posts (yes)
- Less smaller giveaways and more bigger giveaways
-More personal (probably not but imagine the day that'll happen)
-I don't call myself a professional photographer but I'll be taking more photos indeed

One thing I didn't mention in my post is how grateful I am for this blog. This blog has been the motherboard to so many connections. My best friends are across the screen, and just like the Format once sang, the need to fit in is harder when living life from a screen, I believed it at one point. Now, I can't imagine my days not skyping my best friends across the world, using Twitter as a form of communication, and of course, blogging.

Blogging has helped me dig out a voice hidden, opened me up to wonderful people and here's to 2010!

Ok, now the giveaway part: It's a Diana Mini with 3 rolls of film to get you started. My original blog posts were all about Lomography and it's what brought me to begin blogging in the first place. Fitting.

One Year Birthday Giveaway

You have a couple chances to win:

1. You must be a follower. This is a giveaway strictly for my readers. You are the ones that made this year possible, this is a gift for you. It's open globally. Let me know how you read (RSS, bloglovin', Google Follower, etc.)

2. You not only have a chance to be a winner but you have a chance to do your part in humanity. If you donated to Haiti rescue funds, let me know how in the comments below (this is a blog of trust), and I'll enter your name twice. Not sure where to send money to? Here's a great list, thanks to twitter!

You may tweet it (with the Share button below), you may blog about it, but let me know if you did it in this post to keep track of your name. You are welcome to grab the blog button on the side, tell your friends. This is a celebration and all are invited to the party!

Giveaway ends Feb 1.
January is my BLOG birthday month :) I know, I'm a nerd for even bringing attention to it.

my name is our.city.lights and i turn one today

I had this in my drafts for a few months now, but I thought it would be appropriate for a one year anniversary post.

The Nonist was one of the first blogs that I subscribed to and religiously read and studied. The Nonist presented academia at its finest- with humor, and taught me about the historical aspects of a subject. This blog may not have been for everyone, but it thrusted the reader with mass information and absolute enlightenment on art, literature, libraries, science, Christianity, atheism, technology, and design. The writing has enough merit on its own regardless of what topic it was on. It was the reason I began blogging years ago (even if it was on LJ)

When I was recently sick, I didn't have energy to do much, especially look at my Google Reader. At the end of the week, I had 1000+ unread blogs. It was frustrating because after going through most of them, I realized the majority of them didn't have much value to them, at least what I consider valuable. I unsubscribed to 80% of them. Unless the photography was capital, the writing was attractive, I learned something on reading the posts, and there was substance to the blog, and visually inspiring I decided to still be a regular reader of the blog.

Posting a pretty picture is not enough for me these days. The worst about it? I fell into this allure of ADD blogesphere. I know not every blog can be fulfill the vacancy since the Nonist halted, and some days I do appreciate the voiceless content, if it's strong. I know most of us are artistic and blogging is a way to express ourselves. I get it. I appreciate it. It doesn't necessarily mean all blogs are for me, and same for you.

I'll admit, I think I have underestimated the readership I have. You are not imbeciles. All of you are capable of teaching, adding, developing in this community even if it is through your valuable content, pretty pictures or not. So why is it our blog posts have become more shallow? In my defense, I credit laziness, and lack of research. I don't want to be just a pretty lazy picture. I want to be a Nonist, a blog that teaches, adds, communicates, and brings something. I would rather have 5 valuable readers with strong content, than a quantity of posts with no quality.

I'm so thankful for my readers to help me bring a hobby into something more. I honestly don't know why you keep reading at times- I don't have cute outfits to post on, I don't pour out my feelings, I don't stir up controversy (although this post may not be the most popular with some), I don't write about my day, I don't talk about my weekend, I get behind on blog reading and commenting (I promise you will hear from me soon), I avoid using pretty pictures from weheartit.com as best. I just BLOG. Yet hundreds of people read my posts, subscribe, and they keep growing. So thank you, for all the inspiration, and letting my voice be heard in this tiny pocket of the Internet. It gives me hope that I'm growing with this community and I hope to learn much more of you. Happy birthday to my little blog.

I did have a giveaway planned (let's just say it ends with a Mini and starts with a Diana) but tomorrow I'll be much chipper. ♥

Love, Diana (like the camera)

Needle & thread: the best cure

Do you guys remember when I was sick? During that time, staring at a computer screen made things worse. Watching TV wasn't the same, and going outside didn't help. Reading made my head spin. So what did I do besides just lay there? I embroidered, of course! I hated being ill, but it was one of the best things to happen to me! I would have never had to time to make these. I can't wait to get sick again ;)

What do you do to keep sane when you get sick?
