Blog-sitter: Gabbi of Felinofelice

Thank you to the dearest Diana for allowing me (Gabbi of Felinofelice) to visit! You're an inspiration and an amazing friend--my favorite Librarian and Photographer. And since I adore your blog so, I wanted to share one of my most loved Christmas films...

Think it has something to do with my inability to properly gauge time, that the time between Halloween and Christmas seems to pass in the blink of an eye. And the feeling of joy that is supposed to come with the Holiday doesn't always take shape right away. More often than not, I need a small jolt from the world to wake me up. This year it came in the shape of a Christmas classic, Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Despite it's title, the film is actually a rather somber tale of a man who is about to kill himself on Christmas day out of disappointment and despair, but is interrupted by an Angel who presents him with a view of what things would have been like if he'd never been born. Capra was a true sentimentalist, and many of his films were dubbed Capra-corns. In spite of that, the film has a strangeness and a darkness that people often forget. We all remember the basic plot of redemption, but I think what people forget is the peculiar and dark world it springs from. Capra's triumph is in acknowledging the wild and menacing world we live in, while affirming--in the teary-eyed final reel--his cherished values of friendship and individual achievement. A great premise and message for the Holiday's don't you think?

Below is a short video from the film, 5 minutes and 23 seconds in is when the sweetest scene begin--and where the majority of the posted frames come from. It would help to explain the coconut reference in the inspired finds, and also, you'll get to hear the romantic line... 'George Bailey, I'll love you till the day I die.'

I love the idea from the film that we may think other people, or even versions of ourselves who followed a different path, have it better in life, but we don't really know how they feel, what they don't have, etc. Its so easy to take for granted all of the things we should cherish in our lives. Its so easy to feel that we're lacking something. Great pick!

Great guest post, Gabbi! Would you believe that I hadn't seen It's a Wonderful Life until last year? I guess I was under a rock for most of my life. You're right, it is a truly remarkable film with a great message. Love your inspired finds, too. They're always a treat to see :)
