Best of the Decade: Music

Do you really think I would choose just 10 albums in one decade? Ridic. This is a tough one for me. I can't *not* choose just ten albums from ten years ago.

Staring at the screen for one hour, I decided to choose the albums that have changed my life, yes, in some way.
Whether I cried myself to sleep to Upward Over the Mountain on repeat because I missed my parent, or listening to The Fold Out makes me dance like no one is watching, each album was a favorite and helped me connect, reflect, cope, relate, succeed, cry, dance, rejoice and effect who I am. I wish I had a last.fm account years earlier to scrobble what I loved to listen to. I believe this is what it would look like...

These were the albums that made my last decade memorable. Here's to another decade of great music.

UPDATE: I can't believe I forgot the Cribs' Men's Needs, Women's Need's, Whatever, and Saturday Looks Good to Me All your Summer Songs. Don't ever have me do favorites. The list will go on forever.

I think I'd have an impossible time choosing just ten albums so I'm impressed with your courage.

And I listened to several tracks off of Postal Service too many times to count. Great picks!

Good choices. Yay to MCD, Interpol, and Postal Service!

Murder City Devils' "Broken Bottles Empty Hearts definitely changed my life for the better!

This makes me want to make my own list now.

Sufjan & the Postal Service would be in my top 5. I cannot complete the 5 due to indecisiveness!!

Well done! And i was having such trouble deciding just on a top 5 of 2009 that I had to make it a top 6!

I haven't heard of quite a few of yours, must go and find out. Turn on the bright lights is an excellent choice!

I agree with so many of these albums! Haven't actually listened to Interpol's Turn On The Bright Lights, how can I not? Hmm, anyway, I have to say Death Cab's Transatlanticsm was an important album for me. It was my coming-of-age companion album hahaha.

I'm so glad you posted these. Some I know, some I never stumbled across. And I could really use some good music right now...

Glad to see some one else loves "Is This It?" as much as I do. Too band the Strokes' follow-up albums weren't as good.

Great great list-- mine would definitely have Interpol and Wolf Parade on it... And Arcade Fire, Funeral.

I just started listening to Iron & Wine, and I smack myself in the forehead thinking of all that wasted brooding time I could have had if I'd started earlier. Some other bands here I'll have to check out, thanks for this :)

Great great list... And yes, it's obviosuly hard to choose the 10 best albums of the last ten years, impossible! Love Sufjan and Iron and Wine, need to listen to some of the others as well. I love that there is always new music to discover out there.. Happy New Year!

Good stuff, Diana!
When I saw Team Boo at first I nearly squealed - I LOVE THAT ALBUM.
Other great albums on your list as well, and some I must check out! This decade really saw a change in me - I broadened my horizons a lot music wise. But still a long way to go! I like so much stuff now that I know I wouldn't want to listen to at all ten years ago!
I might have a look at my music from the last ten years and make a little list, but I'm terrible at lists!

Anyway. You rock.
Happy new year!

Awesome post! That Murder City Devils album and Modest Mouse album are in the never ending/always growing all time favorite list.

I think my resolution should be to listen to less mainstream music. I might use this list as a reference. Thanks, Happy New Year!

Promise not to yell at me if I tell you that I've never listened to one album on your decade of music list. Ek! I must go try to listen to at least one - I feel so lost.

Great picks. We have really similar taste in music, Diana. Many of these are also among my favorites. It was really difficult for me to narrow down the albums I shared without my post reaching the boring factor (maybe it did? hehe). I could have easily included The Creek Drank The Cradle, Give Up, Team Boo, and Interventions and Lullabies on my list :)

The strokes, Damien Rice - right on! I'd add Bloc party & Santigold. They made everything just a little brighter for me. :)

Another great list! Seriously... very much admire your ability to put these together. I'm so bad at lists. Many many of these I don't know. How would you feel about making each other mixed cd's for the New Year?!!!♥♥ :) Let me know... !!
